Photography Workshop on the Isle of May

Join me for an amazing day out photographing Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, and more on the wonderful Isle of May.

Overview

I want to help you get the best out of your camera by focusing on the best settings and techniques to achieve a variety of images including portrait, behavioural, and the classic flight shots.

To ensure you get our full attention, the maximum number I'll take on these workshops is 3 per trip.  All skill levels are welcome so whether you've just picked up a camera or have been clicking the shutter for a while, I'll help you in any way needed and have some fun along the way.

We will sail on the May Princess from Anstruther and the trip is generally c5 hours all in. Departure times will be confirmed nearer the date once the sailing timetable has been released. Sailing times are based on the tide and the crew have the final say on whether sailings proceed in the event of inclement weather.

Dates

I don't run fixed dates for these tours but aim to work with you on the most suitable dates. However, to take advantage of the activity seen around breeding season, which increases the number of birds on the island, I will be looking to run workshops from mid May through to mid July.

I can usually only take weekend bookings but after 19th June 2026, I can do these tours mid week. Please contact me through my online form below to enquire about any dates that may be of interest.

Cost

Prices of these workshops will be £150pp for the day which includes the cost of the boat transfer, tuition and guidance. These are private workshops and will be run with a maximum of 3 in your group.

Equipment Required

Please bring your camera and a lens.  A focal length of 300mm+ is ideal for this type of photography.

A tripod or monopod isn’t essential, especially considering you’ll be carrying it around the island but you might find it useful if you'd like to take any video footage. Spare batteries & memory cards are recommended.

Sturdy footwear, weather appropriate clothing, and consider a hat for navigating the tern colony, if it’s during breeding season.

What's not included

  • Transport to and from Anstruther (Parking is available at the harbour)

  • Food, please bring some lunch, fluids and your own snacks (chippie at the end is optional!)

  • Personal Insurance
